PART II · Make Something Valuable
Sales Is a Test of Reality
Can an offer discover truth without taking away consent?
In Chicago, the host approaches a man on private property and asks for an interview. The man declines, asks him to leave, and then asks again. The host continues trying to secure a minute.
This is persistence in its least useful form. Nothing about the second request improves the offer, answers a concern, or changes the other person’s authority over the setting. The refusal is complete. A seller who treats every no as a locked door to be picked learns the wrong lesson from rejection: how to protect the attempt from information.
Sales should do the opposite. It should expose the offer to another person’s priorities, questions, alternatives, and freedom to decline. The seller learns whether the problem is real, the proposed change is credible, the price is defensible, and the explanation can be understood. The buyer learns what is being offered, what it can and cannot do, what it will require, and whether the exchange deserves a place among other uses of money and attention.
A sale is therefore more than income and less than proof of a market. It is one observed decision under particular conditions. A refusal can reveal just as much, provided the seller is willing to hear it.
Chris Meroff states the strongest version of a common view. When founders forecast millions in sales, he asks how many people have actually bought, and he favors repeated customer conversations over conviction inside the company. He goes further and treats sales as the only indicator. That is too broad, but it names a useful threshold: someone besides the founder must act. Payment under ordinary terms is stronger evidence than praise, but one sale establishes only that this person, acting in this role, made this decision under these terms on this evidence and delivery promise. It does not prove collected cash, scale, margin, retention, safety, or durability.
Make an offer someone can refuse
Later in the Chicago interviews, a bath-and-body entrepreneur compresses marketing into a familiar progression: people first become aware of the seller, then familiar enough to form an impression, then trusting enough to consider a transaction. He also makes the simpler point that an offer never made cannot be accepted.
Awareness, familiarity, and warmth can open a conversation. They do not prove trustworthiness, and they do not create an obligation to buy. Trust follows when claims survive experience: the product works, inconvenient facts are disclosed, promises are kept, support arrives, and the seller behaves consistently when the answer may be no.
This is why the direct ask matters. Elliot Hill’s sequence at Nike ended not with an emotional product story but with asking for the order. A seller can hide indefinitely behind education, demonstrations, proposals, and friendly meetings because an explicit decision may disappoint. The buyer can also leave a conversation believing that another step will happen automatically. A clear ask removes the ambiguity:
Based on what we have examined, would you like to proceed, decline, or resolve one remaining question first?
The three choices belong together. “Proceed” without “decline” turns the question into pressure. Endless questions without a decision turn discovery into unpaid theater. A respectful ask creates a moment at which both parties can tell the truth.
Diagnose before describing
The old challenge to sell an interviewer a pen often produces a stream of features: its color, ink, balance, prestige, or supposed superiority. Jordan Belfort gives the more useful response in the Miami interviews. Before selling a pen, he wants to know whether the person is looking for one.
The principle is larger than the prop. A description has no commercial meaning until it meets a use. The earlier chapters separated the affected person, user, payer, approver, champion, channel, regulator, and professional authority; reconstructed the current workaround; and estimated a buyer-specific outcome. The sales conversation tests those claims with the people who must live with the result.
Begin by restating the present situation and inviting correction:
I understand that this event occurs under these conditions, the current response is this, and the consequence you care about is this. What have I misunderstood?
Then ask what governs the decision. Which result is essential? Which risk is unacceptable? Who else will use, approve, pay for, implement, or be affected by the change? What evidence would count? What competing project can consume the same budget? What happens if nothing changes?
Diagnosis is not an invitation to excavate private pain merely to gain leverage. Ask only what the decision requires. Explain why sensitive information matters, let the person decline, and do not retain it without a legitimate purpose and proper protection. In health, finance, employment, education, and other unequal relationships, professional duty and informed consent outrank conversion.
Only then connect the offer to the stated criteria. Use the buyer’s language where it remains accurate, show the mechanism, and separate what has been observed from what is expected. A feature that does not alter the decision can remain outside the conversation. Clarity is not saying everything the seller knows; it is making every material fact available without using volume to hide importance.
Truth is part of the product
A private-jet entrepreneur describes sales confidence as a result of repeated work. He made more calls, learned to relate to people, and became willing to state what he could do. More importantly, he says there is intelligence in telling people what he cannot do. In his insurance work, he identifies the client’s fear plainly: the seller may lie.
The buyer cannot inspect every future promise at the moment of sale. A service will be delivered later. A complex product has failure modes that appear only in use. A financial or insurance contract can contain exclusions, costs, and non-guaranteed outcomes that are difficult to compare. Truthfulness therefore belongs inside the product’s value, not merely inside the seller’s character.
Make four statements separately:
What is known. Results, specifications, costs, terms, and limits that can be supported now.
What is expected. A forecast with its assumptions, range, and relevant comparison.
What is unknown. The uncertainty neither party can responsibly remove before deciding.
What would change the recommendation. A fact, use, budget, conflict, or risk that would make another offer or no purchase more suitable.
Confidence should describe the strength of this evidence. It should not be a substitute for it. The entrepreneur reports setting an extraordinary ten-year sales target and finishing below it, though still at very large claimed scale. That story may reveal ambition and effort; it does not give the next seller permission to present aspiration as likelihood. The buyer deserves the forecast before the triumphal ending is known.
Selling oneself needs the same restraint. Competence, availability, judgment, and a record of kept commitments are relevant. Wealth, confidence, proximity to famous people, or an ability to dominate a room are not evidence that this offer suits this buyer. State the work that can be backed up, the boundary of expertise, and the person who will actually deliver it.
Treat a concern as information
Anton, an entrepreneur interviewed about sales and company building, argues that objection handling begins before the objection appears. Understand the person’s situation, behavior, present state, and desired state; anticipate reasons the change may be unsuitable; then build justified confidence in the path between the two. A closing conversation should not be an attempt to rescue a weak process with one clever line.
The word objection can itself be misleading. It makes the buyer sound like an obstacle between the seller and a deserved outcome. Use unresolved concern instead, and classify it before responding:
Fit. The problem, use, capability, risk, or timing does not match.
Evidence. The claimed result is not yet credible in this setting.
Understanding. The mechanism, scope, term, or comparison remains unclear.
Trust. Prior conduct, a conflict, missing disclosure, or the seller’s incentives make the promise doubtful.
Economics. Price, cash timing, implementation burden, or the best alternative defeats the case.
Decision process. Another person, review, approval, or ordinary deliberation is legitimately required.
Refusal. The buyer does not want to proceed and owes no further reason.
For the first six, ask permission to examine one concern: “Would it be useful to look at that together?” Supply relevant evidence, revise the offer, arrange a safe proof, include the missing decision-maker, or conclude that the fit is poor. Do not answer a financial constraint with shame, a trust problem with urgency, or an absent capability with another promise.
The final category ends the sales attempt. A soft phrase such as “I need to think” can be an unresolved concern or a courteous refusal. The seller may ask once whether a specific question or later date would be useful. If the answer is no, vague, or unreturned, stop. Consent to a conversation is not permanent, and a previous purchase does not create consent to repeated pursuit.
Preparation is not presumed consent
A digital-asset fund owner in Florida recommends assuming the close. Taken literally, the tactic invites a seller to behave as if the buyer’s decision has already been made. That can manufacture momentum through forms, payment questions, or logistical language before agreement exists.
The useful interpretation is internal: prepare as though a serious transaction may occur. Know the scope, evidence, terms, implementation sequence, and next step. Remove clerical friction after the buyer says yes. During the conversation, assume only that the buyer is capable of deciding.
Rapport works the same way. The fund owner uses humor and likability; the fashion entrepreneur in another interview remembers sincere, personal service as a reason customers returned and referred others. Warmth can make it easier to exchange candid information. It cannot establish suitability or erase an unfavorable term. Frontline workers should not be required to perform intimacy, and personal details should not become covert persuasion data.
The seller also needs a real alternative. A later Florida speaker says negotiating strength comes from being willing to walk away. This is sound when walking protects quality, capacity, safety, price discipline, or an ethical boundary. It becomes theater when a false deadline or feigned scarcity is used to frighten the buyer. The clean version is mutual:
Either party may conclude that the exchange does not work, without punishment for having examined it honestly.
Urgency can be a material fact. A license may expire, a production window may close, a price may depend on a dated input, or delay may carry a documented cost. State the source, date, consequence, and available alternatives. Do not shorten the window, conceal an extension, imply false scarcity, or enlarge fear to make a weak offer feel necessary.
Practice without hardening
An unidentified young owner says scripts and appearance cannot reproduce the experience of hearing no and still communicating with people of different ages and backgrounds. The observation is right about embodied practice. A person learns pacing, listening, emotional regulation, and explanation by trying, receiving a response, and trying again.
Exposure alone does not guarantee improvement. It can teach manipulation, stereotypes, numbness, or a rehearsed refusal to hear. Practice becomes skill only when the result changes the next attempt.
Review a conversation while it is fresh:
What did the buyer say the problem and desired change were?
Which claim did I make, and what evidence supported it?
When did the conversation become clearer, and when did it become tense or confused?
Was the concern about fit, evidence, understanding, trust, economics, process, or refusal?
Did I answer the concern, revise the offer, or merely speak longer?
Did the buyer have a usable opportunity to compare, pause, and decline?
What one change should the next conversation test?
Different people deserve individual attention, not demographic scripts. Age, language, disability, culture, role, and prior experience can affect access and communication, but a category does not reveal a person’s motive. Ask about preferences, provide accessible formats, use qualified interpretation where needed, and test understanding without condescension.
Nor should abuse be accepted as tuition. Rejection is part of selling; harassment, threats, discrimination, and violence are workplace hazards. Employers owe clear exit rules, escalation, support, and protection. Ending an unsafe interaction is judgment, not failure.
Follow up with a stopping point
Many useful decisions need time. The buyer may need an implementation estimate, legal review, a partner’s judgment, a reference, or evidence from a pilot. Follow-up serves the decision when it delivers the agreed missing item at the agreed time.
End the conversation by recording five things together: the unresolved question, who owns it, what evidence is needed, the next date or event, and the condition that closes the matter. If the buyer does not authorize another contact, there is no follow-up. If the agreed attempts receive no answer, the matter closes. A later material change may justify a fresh invitation, not a resumption of the old pursuit.
Persistence belongs in improving the offer, reaching another qualified buyer, or returning when circumstances genuinely change. It does not belong in wearing down one person’s boundary. A high volume of respectful attempts can teach the market; repeated pressure on the same person teaches only avoidance.
Complete the reciprocal exchange record
After each meaningful decision, return to the four blocks opened in Chapter 7. Do not add a second sales checklist; update the shared record with what the exchange actually established:
- Decision
Record proceed, decline, defer by agreement, choose an alternative, no fit, or no response. Keep the buyer’s criteria and role visible, invent no reason for a refusal, and state the authorized next contact or stopping point.
- Evidence step
Record the claim and rung tested, the unresolved concern in the buyer’s language, evidence supplied, scope revised, question deferred, disconfirming result, and the one next learning another exchange can test.
- Commercial terms
Record the actual scope, price, timing, responsibility, information, remedy, review, and exit discussed, including every change made during the conversation. Distinguish an agreement, invoice, and collected cash.
- Consent and delivery
Record material disclosure, safeguards, affected people, implementation duty, the buyer’s usable chance to compare and refuse, and the seller’s obligation after commitment. Preparation or prior contact never substitutes for consent.
Aggregate patterns, not private dossiers. If many qualified buyers identify the same missing evidence, cost, risk, or implementation burden, the company has learned something about the offer. If one buyer declines, the company has learned about one decision. Protect both conclusions from the founder’s desire to turn every result into validation.
One sale records one decision and creates an obligation; it may not even prove that cash was collected or value delivered. Repeat use, renewal, referral, and healthy economics may establish more. The next task is distribution: reaching enough appropriate people without spending more trust than the business earns.
